Trader Joe’s Trader Joe’s 1000 Day Aged Gouda Cheese Review
The first time I had aged gouda was at my friend’s Aunt’s house in Scheveningen, Holland. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was in the mother land of gouda! I fell in love with the stuff at first bite, and ever since then, I feel like I’ve had a serious measuring stick to compare other aged gouda products up to that I’d buy back home here in California. I’ve had some real off tasting stuff, but this one my friends, is solid gold!
Texture and flavor-wise, this cheese is on point. Creamy, milky, slightly salty zing, and most importantly of all, speckled on the inside are those little crystallized parts of the cheese that give you that undeniably unique crunch that only a fine aged gouda can give you. For the price, I think the stuff is awesome, and I feel it stands up just fine to some of the more better know brands, such as Old Amsterdam.
It is made in the Netherlands, which is another really important thing, and I’ll tell you why. My friend’s cousin in Holland, who owned a cheese shop actually, told me something I found interesting. He claimed that because Holland is a country that is largely below sea level, the grass that grows there is uniquely moist, due to the farming soil being extra saturated with water. The cows eat this grass, and in turn produce a more intensely moist milk. This milk is then used in the production of Dutch gouda, and yields what we all know as “cheese cocaine”. Give it a shot! And let us know what you think down below! $11.99/lb
